The Art of the Wheelwright - Building Heavy Wagon Hubs

Program three:  Building Heavy Wagon Hubs is finished! This program demonstrates and explains all that is involved with the building of heavy wagon hubs.  Starting from a rough block to cutting the spoke mortises, boring and setting the boxing, sizing and setting hub bands, we show each step along the way with jigs, tips and pointers of how and why.  You will understand the design of the tapered mortise and tenon joint as the spoke fits into the hub, what to look for in boxing styles and how to make sure your hub bands are tight enough to prevent the hub from “blowing apart.”  We have this available, as the printer is finished with packaging details.

Program four:  The Building of Heavy Wagon Wheels is nearing the final stages of completion!  Final shots and editing are underway at this time.  Showing how to build on the hubs you have just built, this program explains the design of the common wagon spoke and how it is inherently different than a Sarven spoke, fitting the spoke into the tapered hub mortises, how sawn section felloes are designed and installed in contrast to bent felloe halves, how to make sure you have symmetrical wheels, setting wagon tires and finally putting back the California rivets.  (Looks to be about 110 minutes long)

Soon to follow:  Turning light carriage and buggy hubs, and bending wood (bows, runners, felloes & more).

Welcome anytime!

We are celebrating 31 years in the horse-drawn vehicle and wheelwright trade.

Situated in Yellowstone Park’s virtual backyard, in the scenic foothills of the Beartooth Mountains (where our coaches are used at Roosevelt Lodge) – our small town, family owned business remains true to the art and craft of the Old West’s proudest lineage and traditions.

In the words of Lynn Miller, editor of the Small Farm Journal, Dave Engel is “…an old-style master wheelwright…a modern craftsman looking to understand and share the principles of his chosen craft.”

Whatever your interests and/or level of knowledge and expertise, you are more than welcome to stop by our 5,000 square foot shop.  Here’s where we do our coach and wagon restorations, with everything that comes with wheels, wheelwright matters, buggy wheels, buggy parts, horse-drawn vehicles of all types and descriptions; singletrees, doubletrees, shafts, draft horse supplies and whatever you need in relation horse-drawn vehicles.

Plus we have put together the only instructional videos about wheelwrighting.  You aren’t restricted to learning and watching in person – you can watch, and maybe even learn something, wherever you happen to be.  We are continuing to a put together our video series, to include heavy wheels (new and repairs), carriage joinery, wood bending, upholstery, painting, and hub turning, with jigs, shortcuts and tips.

You are encouraged to call, email, or write.  We accept Visa, Master Card, AMEX, Discover and PayPal.

We also ship USPS, UPS, FedEx, and truck freight.

See you when we can.  Happy Trails,

     Dave and Diane Engel
